Chapter 26

Ellie lay still; she wasn’t shivering as much after he’d covered her. She could hear him on the other side of the privacy screen.

“I’m not going to run away yet, so you may as well untie me.”

Aiwin didn’t respond. A door opened and closed. How odd. They had been talking, but then he’d become shy. She was supposed to be the shy one, and she never remembered making a guy feel awkward. The rush of control was exhilarating, but she had to get serious about escaping. If he was really into her, maybe she should play that role and wait for little Joey to come back? If she could get Aiwin to loosen her straps, the next time Joey visited, she’d be able to see if her tattoo glowed.

The door opened and closed again. A second later, Aiwin strode around the screen carrying a tray.

“Untie me?” she asked.

He grinned. He actually seemed to contemplate it, but then his brows drew together, and he shook his head gently. “I can’t. The thought of losing you just yet makes me ill. I really want to know you more. But I’ll untie one hand, and you can feed yourself.”

“The other hand, please, I need to stretch it.”

As Aiwin untied her, she eyed his height. He was tall and lean, like all the elves she’d seen. “What’s a royal elf doing in Hell, then?”

She winced as her hand lowered slowly, painfully, and when she opened her eyes, Aiwin seemed to grimace along with her. He gently rubbed the feeling back into her aching shoulder.

“I live here.”

Ellie’s wry smile was enough to make him snort.

“Fine. I was born here.”

“How is an elf born in Hell? I mean, was your mom here when you were born?”

“No. Anyway, I’m the one that’s supposed to be asking the questions.”

“Oh, right.”

Ellie picked up a piece of bread and was about to eat it when Kokabi reached out to her mind.

“We have a gift for you, Ellie. Come to the Nephilim entrance in two nights. We’ll give you time to get here.”

Ellie blanched and dropped the bread on the tray.

Aiwin looked up sharply. “What’s wrong?”

She shook her head, not wanting to let on that she’d been spoken to by them. She would ignore him. It used to work, but the last time she ignored them, she was attacked. Desperation at what was about to happen hit her quickly, dumping adrenaline into her system. Sure enough, the assault came fast. It savagely bit into her brain, making her lose her ability to think. The screeching sound battled into her mind, causing her to grab her head.

“Ellie, what’s wrong?” Aiwin asked urgently. He cradled her hand and lifted her head up to inspect her eyes.

“Stop!” she yelled.

“Hush, Ellie!” Aiwin whispered urgently.

“Get out of my head!” she screamed.

Aiwin stepped back, alarmed, then Ellie felt a powerful strike on her chin. The punch dazed her, and she blacked out but only for a few seconds. She was floating near consciousness as she felt her body being moved.
